Americans use 300 million printer ribbons every year. Nearly 99 percent of those ribbons are dumped in landfills, when they could be easily recycled. Most people are aware that printer ink and toner cartridges can be recycled, but since printer ribbons are more difficult to rework, the programs that do recycle them are not as well publicized.

To reverse a wasteful trend, take initiative in your office. First, copy down the names, makes, and models of all the printers, copiers and fax machines in your office. Then, set up a collection bin for all of the plastic printer ribbons. Contact organizations like Northwest Ribbon Recycling, Inc. who will in turn send you a prepaid label. Place all of the used ribbons in the mail and ship them off! You will derive great satisfaction from knowing that your office is doing its part to save the environment.
